In its timely exploration, of our perceived limits of love, gender expression, motherhood, and childhood— this film invites Alaizah to be our guide as we learn and unlearn alongside her the limits and possibilities of identity and connection.

How To Make a Rainbow navigates the audience through Alaizah’s process of figuring out what to call her papa, who is beginning a gender transition. Together they navigate homelessness, Jade’s exploration of gender, as well as, the daily joys and struggles of parenting and growing as a family.

How To Make a Rainbow has been screened and featured in festivals around the world including: OutFest Film Festival Los Angeles, Inside Out Toronto LGBTQ Film Festival, NewFest New York’s LGBTQ Film Festival, Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, and many more. The OutFest Film Festival audience awarded How to Make a Rainbow the Best Short Documentary of the year.

Jade Phoenix is a dynamic performance artist and poet who holds her identities close to her art. Her Scorpio Femme magic and vulnerability gift her audience a vision for a collective liberated future. Part of Jade’s personal healing process is found in her ability to connect to the power of performance as a healing art. Jade has a special understanding of the intricacies necessary to create safe spaces for QTBIPOC communities. She believes creating safe spaces for QTBIPOC communities welcomes collective healing and new avenues for creative expression.
Poet
Jade brings her unique perspective and lived experience of the world as a First Gen Filipinx Trans, Femme, and parent, to her work and presence. Jade is a beacon of transformative energy in our current climate of hate and transphobia. Her work honors those who have paved the way for her while also showcasing a hopeful road map for the future generations of QTBIPOC communities. Jade’s poetry was featured at the Asian American Writers Workshop in New York City. She is also a featured writer for the Lambda Literary.

Some of her past workshops include: Radical Self-Love, Art as Healing Practice, and performance/ writing workshops. Jade is also known to curate new workshops according to specific programming and community needs.
